It was in 1968 when a group of businessmen came together in an effort to create an alliance of purchasing practitioners sharing a common vision. Thus, in a meeting of the Consultations and Assistance Service Committee of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the idea of forming the Purchasing Association of the Philippines (PAP) came about.
Three years after it was born, the association sponsored the 1st Asian Congress in the Philippines. Few years later the Association sponsored a Professorial chair at the Ateneo de Manila University and later at the De La Salle University. The objective was to increase the awareness of the purchasing profession at the college level.
Nineteen years after its inception, purchasing began to include planning, warehousing, distribution and receiving, that a change of corporate name was deemed necessary. PAP became what we now know as the Purchasing and Materials Management Association of the Philippines (PMMAP).
From its 98 member companies during its first year, PMMAP now has more than 300 member companies coming from various industries located in Metro Manila and its environs, with seven chapters to boot.
To update its members on what is happening around the world, PMMAP became an affiliate of the International Federation of Purchasing and Materials Management based in Netherlands and a C.P.M. allied member of the Institute for Supply Management (formerly the National Association of Purchasing Management) based in Tempe, Arizona, USA. Also, regular seminars and annual conferences are conducted to keep members abreast in the new techniques and development in the field of supply chain management.
In recognition of the increasing significance of supply management, the association has changed its name to Philippine Institute for Supply Management (PISM). The new name embodies our commitment as an organization to serve the broadest spectrum of supply management.
